Engineering — Reference Implementation

WebAuthn Enterprise Server-Side Validator

Purpose: Production-ready Node.js/TypeScript backend validation server — cryptographically verifies client attestation payloads, parses hardware AAGUID, and enforces NIS2 Zero Trust security checks.

Version: 1.0.0 | Last Updated: 2026-06-28 Dependencies: webauthn-client-enterprise-handler.md (type definitions), siem-logging-pipeline.md (logging pattern)

Production-ready Node.js/TypeScript backend validation server handler. This component ingests client-side payloads, cryptographically verifies the clientDataJSON and attestationObject, parses the hardware AAGUID, and enforces strict security checks matching the 2026/2027 Zero Trust and NIS2 specifications.

1. Backend Server Dependencies

This handler uses the standard @simplewebauthn/server package for low-level CBOR/FIDO2 binary parsing while layering custom Enterprise Attestation verification rules on top.

bash
npm install @simplewebauthn/server

2. TypeScript Enterprise WebAuthn Validation Server

  verifyRegistrationResponse,
  VerifiedRegistrationResponse,

}

3. Production Deployment Strategy & Backend Security Controls

  • Replay Attack Protection: The expectedChallenge parameter must be stored in a short-lived (maximum 2-minute expiration), server-side distributed cache like Redis. Once a validation attempt hits this validator endpoint, delete the challenge from Redis immediately to ensure single-use guarantees.

  • AAGUID Enforcement: The hardwareAaguidWhitelist lookup constrains authenticator models, not individual corporate-owned assets. A personal authenticator of the same approved model can still satisfy this check. Pair AAGUID policy with device inventory binding (serial/attestation cert chain, MDM registration, or user-to-device issuance records). Match approved models against the FIDO Alliance Metadata Service (MDS) to validate certification posture (e.g., FIDO L2/L3).

  • Origin Binding Strictness: The expectedOrigin parameter must be checked exactly. If the system runs behind reverse proxies or international localization domains (e.g., .eu vs .com), ensure the incoming host exactly matches cryptographic boundaries to block advanced multi-domain relay attacks.
