Multi-Region Active-Active Redis Replication
Purpose: Active-active multi-region Redis topology with CRDT patterns for sub-millisecond local reads, cross-region CAEP/SSF revocation sync, and split-brain resilience across eu-central-1 and eu-west-1.
Version: 1.0.0 | Last Updated: 2026-06-28 Dependencies: redis-challenge-pipeline-docker.md (ZtaRedisPipelineManager base pattern)
Point-in-time challenges and high-speed token revocations (CAEP/SSF) cannot rely on a single database node across geographic boundaries, as WAN latency (typically 20–30ms) would degrade the gRPC API gateway validation loops. The following specification outlines how to configure a multi-region Redis cluster using Redis CRDTs (Conflict-Free Replicated Data Types) or active-active replication to maintain sub-millisecond local reads while synchronizing token states cross-region.

This multi-region orchestration blueprint sets up independent local instances that form a secure, bidirectional replication topology over a shared overlay mesh network.

Running active-active topologies across geographic regions introduces data consistency challenges during network partitions. Apply distinct serialization patterns based on data classification.
Pattern A: Anti-Replay WebAuthn Challenges (Ephemeral Data)
- The Constraint: High entropy single-use validation strings must remain unique.
- The Strategy: Use Region-Specific Prefixes to ensure keys never collide during cross-region writes.
- Frankfurt Key:
zta:challenge:eu-central:4af82b... - Ireland Key:
zta:challenge:eu-west:99cb14...
- Frankfurt Key:
- Resolution Engine: When validating a payload, routing engines query the designated region prefix origin first. Since challenges are deleted atomically upon execution via the verification middleware, concurrent multi-region modification of a single challenge is programmatically impossible.
Pattern B: CAEP/SSF Blacklist Revocations (Shared Global State)
- The Constraint: A session eviction event initiated by a SOAR response playbook in Germany must propagate immediately to Ireland.
- The Strategy: Implement Last-Write-Wins (LWW) Semantic CRDTs.
- Because blocklist state changes are monotonic (keys transition only from a clean state to a revoked state), the token interceptor just looks for key presence.
typescript
import { createClient, RedisClientType } from 'redis';
export class CrossRegionZtaDataPipeline {
private client: RedisClientType;
constructor(connectionUri: string) {
this.client = createClient({ url: connectionUri });
}
public async connect(): Promise<void> {
await this.client.connect();
}
/**
* Propagates a global identity revocation across regions using Last-Write-Wins semantics
*/
public async broadcastLwwSessionRevocation(userId: string, ttlSeconds: number = 3600): Promise<void> {
const key = `revoked:session:${userId}`;
const timestamp = Date.now();
// Use a Redis transaction to atomically bind the value and creation timestamp metadata
await this.client.multi()
.hSet(key, 'status', 'revoked')
.hSet(key, 'updated_at', timestamp.toString())
.expire(key, ttlSeconds)
.exec();
}
/**
* Local, low-latency evaluation loop executed inside the regional Envoy API Gateway thread
*/
public async isSessionRevokedLocally(userId: string): Promise<boolean> {
const key = `revoked:session:${userId}`;
const status = await this.client.hGet(key, 'status');
return status === 'revoked';
}
public async disconnect(): Promise<void> {
await this.client.disconnect();
}
}4. Cross-Region Failover Architecture
To protect the continuous access evaluation platform against total regional datacenter outages, configure a fast health-check and traffic shifting matrix at the Global Server Load Balancer (GSLB) or Anycast DNS layer.
| Primary Edge Route Target | Health Check Probe Endpoint | Primary Action (Healthy) | Secondary Action (Regional Outage) | Max Convergence Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
eu-central.identity.eu | https://api.eu-central-1 | Route to Frankfurt Cluster | Failover to eu-west-1 | < 5 Seconds |
eu-west.identity.eu | https://api.eu-west-1 | Route to Ireland Cluster | Failover to eu-central-1 | < 5 Seconds |
- Continuous Read Resiliency: If the inter-region WAN connection drops, local replica pools drop into independent standalone operation modes. They continue to process and validate local platform WebAuthn requests and check local session state tables immediately, ensuring zero application downtime for users within that continent quadrant.
- Eventual Resynchronization: Once the WAN connection is restored, the replication controllers automatically reconcile and merge any missing global CAEP/SSF revocation entries in the background using the timestamp metadata.
